June 8, 2017 / Catherine Nicholas / Blog

Alex Guzmán (’07) returned to MLWGS on June 8 to present the Linda Howe Award, which recognizes the graduating senior with the highest number of community service hours.  The Howe Award is presented by a Governor’s School graduate with a record of public service.  Alex serves as the Director of Fair Housing at Housing Opportunities Made Equal of Virginia.

Alex presented this year’s award to Yashna Nainani (’17), who volunteered more than 800 hours of her time at organizations like the Atlee Library, the CHW Medical Center, Chickahominy Middle School, and Festival of Life India.  Librarian Wendy DeGroat selected the book Own It: Leadership Lessons from Women Who Do by Aparna Jain as Yashna’s Book Award.  Yashna will be attending VCU next year and plans to pursue a career in medicine.

Congratulations to Yashna, and many thanks to Alex!
