FIRST Team 422 Hosts STEM Event for Middle Schoolers
On Saturday February 24th, the Maggie L. Walker Governor’s School’s robotics team, FIRST Team 422, hosted a community STEM event geared toward local middle school students to promote interest and connect them with community STEM organizations. FIRST Team 422 consists of 60 high school students from 12 local school districts. FIRST is an international nonprofit that inspires students through the pipeline programs of Lego League through FIRST Robotics Competition to pursue academic sport of robotics.
The event was open to middle school students with the goal of STEM exploration and innovation. The program included classroom workshops featuring coding, robotics, data analysis, and a DNA lab, as well as exhibition booths and lunch. Presenters included The Steward School, CodeVA, Insource Solutions, Bitcubs, VCU’s Spit for Science, Southeastern Institute of Research, and the VCU daVinci Center. Educational partners were the Boys and Girls Club of Metro Richmond, as well as Richmond, Henrico and Chesterfield County Public Schools.
