Grant Spotlight: SABR Analytics Conference
The MLWGS Foundation provided one of our largest grants of 2018-19 to offset the cost for 20 of Mr. Benesh’s math modeling students traveling to the SABR Analytics Conference in Phoenix in early March. The Foundation covered all remaining trip costs for Dragons in financial need. While there, they competed in the Diamond Dollars Case Competition, which pits students from colleges (and one high school!) across the country against each other in an analytic Major League Baseball operations decision — the type of decision a team’s general manager and staff face over the course of a season. One Maggie Walker team took first place in their division, defeating several college teams. MLWGS is now the first school to boast winning teams for three straight years. The students also got to take some breaks to hike and catch a spring training game. Mr. Benesh has gone above and beyond to make this trip the culminating experience of a year’s worth of instruction. We’re glad to be a part of supporting one of our amazing teachers who provide such incredible opportunities to the students here.
