MLWGS Foundation COVID-19 Operations Update
We are working diligently at the MLWGS Foundation to respond to the pressures that the COVID-19 pandemic is putting on our work and our community. We want to keep our supporters up to date about what has changed and what has not.
As all Virginia schools are closed for the rest of the year, the Foundation Office staff will be operating remotely. We will be able to check our office voicemail; however, the best way to reach Foundation staff during this time is via email at firstname.lastname@example.org or
We will not be able to retrieve our mail until March 30th, so if you mailed a gift on or after March 10th, we have not yet been able to process it. We are so grateful for your commitment and will get you a gift acknowledgement as soon as we possibly can. The school administration is developing plans and procedures for facilities issues like this one, and as of now, we believe we will be able to retrieve our mail weekly, excluding the week of spring break (April 4th– 12th).
The Foundation has worked with the library and the school administration to provide grants for grocery support in the first weeks of school closure for Dragons who qualify for free and reduced lunch. The school administration has been working with school districts to link students with the resources provided to students in their cities or counties moving forward.
Foundation events we have canceled in light of the school closure include Alumni Showcase and Grandparents Day. We look forward to holding these events in 2021.
As of now, we believe that 2020 alumni reunions, scheduled for the fall of 2020, will go on as normal. We are still looking for event chairs for the classes of 2000, 2005, and 2010. 1995 and 2015 are chaired and ready to go!
The Governor’s School Foundation also still plans to host the Day of the Dragon on Thursday, April 30th. The 2020 Day of the Dragon will be an opportunity to virtually bring together our amazing Governor’s School family as we celebrate our alumni and current students, especially the incredible class of 2020. The transition for our MLWGS Seniors will not be an easy one under these unprecedented circumstances, but we know that they have the tremendous support of the Governor’s School community. Stay tuned for details regarding how you can participate in this event.
Finally, we want to express our gratitude for the leadership from our Board of Directors as well as Dr. Lowerre, Dr. Ellis, Mr. Smith, and Mr. Bortz. They have worked to respond to this crisis with grace and speed under very difficult circumstances. Our thanks go out to them!
And thank you for your ongoing dedication to the Governor’s School Foundation.
