Grant Spotlight: Rubik’s Cube Competition

The MLWGS Cubing Club held their first-ever Rubik's Cube Competition on Saturday, April 13th at MLWGS.  The event sold out and was a huge success!  About 250 people, including 90 competitors from age 6 to 40 along with families, guests, and volunteers came from as far away as West Virginia and North Carolina to test their skills in events with the 2x2, 3x3, 4x4, and pyraminx.  The competition was made possible by club sponsor Dawn Grois, the World

Grant Spotlight: Chicago Manual of Style

The Foundation recently provided a grant to purchase a one-year institutional license for the Chicago Manual of Style for student use.  Though the request came through librarian Wendy DeGroat, the license will be of use to all students, particularly those in Global Studies, FIRC, and some senior seminars.  Access to the most recent CMS is particularly useful for students (and teachers) attempting to cite unusual primary sources.  The Foundation is glad to be able to help streamline student research

Grant Spotlight: Newtowne Tutoring

Newtowne Tutoring club members provide weekly, one-on-one after school tutoring, snacks, and organized play for elementary and middle school students from nearby schools.  Service is one of the founding principles of the school, and the Newtowne tutors are one of the best examples of how students give back in meaningful ways.  The Foundation provided a grant to support the club, and the students had this to say: "Your generosity is greatly appreciated by tutors and tutees alike. 

Grant Spotlight: MENA Seminar Morocco trip

For the third year, Robinette Cross took MENA Seminar students on a week-long trip to Morocco, the culminating experience of a year's worth of instruction.  This year's trip was the largest ever, with 27 students in all.  Students visited Casablanca, Marrakesh, the Saharan town of Merzouga, Fez, and the capital city of Rabat.  Robinette Cross has lived and studied in Morocco and still visits frequently.  She is one of the outstanding teachers who goes above

Grant Spotlight: Future Dragon Days

In 2017, a committee of faculty and admin team members worked to revamp the days for admitted students that used to be called shadow days and are now known as Future Dragon Days.  It was a pleasure to see the fruits of some of those efforts this week as admitted eighth graders visited the school Monday through Thursday.  Students receive a golden ticket in the mail as their invitation to the day as well as

Grant Spotlight: ASL trip to Gallaudet

On March 15, forty ASL students toured Gallaudet University in Washington, DC with their teacher, Mrs. Carlisa Gunter.  Gallaudet is dedicated to the education of deaf and hard of hearing students.  A grant from the MLWGS Foundation covered the cost of bus transportation for students and chaperones.  "Thanks again for making this field trip possible for ASL students to enjoy and remember for years to come!" Mrs. Gunter wrote.  "Without the Foundation, it would be impossible."

Grant Spotlight: Art 5 solo exhibitions

Every year, Art 5 students present solo exhibitions of their work to an audience of friends and family.  This is one of the culminating experiences of their art education at MLWGS and gives them a chance to learn about how to put on a gallery show.  Molly Goodman ('19) gave a great artist's talk about the evolution of her work and her use of materials as well as the impact of feminism on her art.  The Foundation provides

Grant Spotlight: MIT Sloan Sports Analytics Conference

Thanks to a generous grant from the foundation, Dickson Benesh was able to attend the MIT Sloan Sports Analytics Conference in Boston, MA in early March.  Mr. Benesh is pictured here with Michael Lewis, the author of Moneyball: the Art of Winning an Unfair Game.  Moneyball is one of the texts Mr. Benesh teaches in his Baseball Sabermetrics seminar class.  This unique conference also included talks by noted authors such as Malcolm Gladwell, Nate Silver, Stephen Dubner
