Not every MLWGS student has reliable internet access at home, which can make completing homework assignments, projects, and research outside of school hours a challenge.  In recognition of this fact, MLWGS Chief Technology Officer David Bortz worked with the Foundation to purchase ten Kajeet wifi devices and service for them.  The small, portable devices act as wireless hotspots and are specifically designed to be used in a K-12 setting.  The Foundation is paying for another school year’s

Mr. McGuire's annual Canada trip is currently underway, and students are enjoying June weather in Ottawa and Toronto.  They recently visited the Office of the Speaker of the Senate, the Honourable George J. For the past few years, English Department Head Lisa Williams has organized a trip for the entire freshmen class to visit the Black History Museum & Cultural Center of Virginia and the Maggie L. Walker National Historic on the day of Senior Showcase.  This year, a grant from the Foundation is covering admission for every student for the BHMoVA. The MLWGS Foundation recently provided a grant to cover the cost of admission to the VMFA's "Awaken: A Tibetan Buddhist Journey Toward Enlightenment" exhibit for Kinsey Buhrman's Eastern Religions students. Grant Spotlight: Three Teams Place in Top 10% of College-level Math Modeling Contest

Over 25,000 teams competed in this year's MCM, which is an international math modeling contest which pits university teams against each other.  MLWGS recently had three teams earn honors as Meritorious, which puts them in the top 10% of all the college-level competing teams.  This year's teams were asked to create an evacuation plan for the Louvre museum in Paris, France.  This complex math modeling problem involved detailed analysis of exit locations and museum visitor

MLGWS alumnus Matt Elliott ('04) recently returned to his alma mater to teach yoga to sophomore PE students for the month of April. Tara Eschenroeder started this program some years ago with Athletic Director Paige Hawkins, and it has been a highlight of every spring at MLWGS since.  Tara handed the program over to Matt this year to great success.  Having alumni back in the building in a teaching capacity is a wonderful thing, and we hope we'll see

One of the things that makes MLWGS a special place to learn is its location in the heart of Richmond.  It's an easy walk to the Firehouse Theatre, which just hosted four performances of Songs for Janie, a musical interpretation by Tamara Wellons of Zora Neale Hurston's Their Eyes Were Watching God.  The Foundation funded a grant request from English Department Chair Lisa Williams to cover the cost of 35 student tickets to give students the opportunity

Grant Spotlight: Rubik’s Cube Competition

The MLWGS Cubing Club held their first-ever Rubik's Cube Competition on Saturday, April 13th at MLWGS.  The event sold out and was a huge success!  About 250 people, including 90 competitors from age 6 to 40 along with families, guests, and volunteers came from as far away as West Virginia and North Carolina to test their skills in events with the 2x2, 3x3, 4x4, and pyraminx.  The competition was made possible by club sponsor Dawn Grois, the World
