Grant Spotlight: Art 5 Senior Solo Shows

By |2022-03-02T15:15:51+00:00December 4th, 2019|Spotlight - Grants|

The MLWGS Foundation provided a grant to support Art 5 senior solo shows in 2019-20. Artist (and amateur beekeeper) Mia Rodriguez (‘20) inaugurated the series with her exhibition “Throwaway USA.”  These solo shows give students the opportunity to learn what goes into putting together a gallery opening, from installing pieces to printing and mailing invitations to writing an artist statement. Your gifts to the 2019-29 Annual Fund support everything we do.

Every year, Art 5 students present solo exhibitions of their work to an audience of friends and family.  This is one of the culminating experiences of their art education at MLWGS and gives them a chance to learn about how to put on a gallery show.  Molly Goodman ('19) gave a great artist's talk about the evolution of her work and her use of materials as well as the impact of feminism on her art.  The Foundation provides

Providing access to every opportunity MLWGS has to offer is one of the most important goals of the Foundation.  To that end, we made $20,000 available for students in financial need in the 2017-18 school year.  Jeff Hall and Kori Mosley accessed student aid funding to cover costs for three students in need of financial assistance to cover the costs of the art department trip to New York City.  Every single student at Maggie Walker

Some of the enhancement grants we give out are for little things that add something extra to a project, lesson, or classroom.  For example, art department chair Jeff Hall applied for $225 worth of funding to print invitations and provide vinyl lettering for the solo art shows his Art 5 students put on throughout the year.  These art shows are an impressive undertaking that give students experience exhibiting their work.  Yesterday, Kenan Potter ('18) opened

Every year, art teachers Jeff Hall and Kori Mosley take art students to Washington, DC for a day of guided visits to museums around the city.  Last week, the group visited the Smithsonian's Hirshhorn Museum and Sculpture Garden, and the Smithsonian American Art Museum and Renwick Gallery.  The Foundation was able to offset the cost of this trip for all students and to cover the remaining costs for one student in financial need.  It's experiences like these,
