Grant Spotlight: Songs for Janie

One of the things that makes MLWGS a special place to learn is its location in the heart of Richmond.  It's an easy walk to the Firehouse Theatre, which just hosted four performances of Songs for Janie, a musical interpretation by Tamara Wellons of Zora Neale Hurston's Their Eyes Were Watching God.  The Foundation funded a grant request from English Department Chair Lisa Williams to cover the cost of 35 student tickets to give students the opportunity

This year, the MLWGS faculty has applied for nearly $25,000 worth of Foundation support in the category of classroom instructional activities.  Funding in this category is available for supplemental activities or materials that teachers would like to use to enrich their instruction.  In March, English instructor Janet Spencer received a grant to cover the cost of bus transportation for all seniors plus all students in John Piersol's Drama class to see a performance of Hamlet
