Taylor Teaching Award Winner: David Barnes

We're pleased to share that the Taylor Teaching Award selection committee selected David Barnes as the 2019-20 winner!  The committee is made up of education professionals unaffiliated with MLWGS who volunteer their time to assess applications each year.  Mr. Barnes plans to use the award to travel to Tanzania, where he will hike Mt. Meru, go on safari in the Serengeti, and snorkel off the coast of Zanzibar.  He will focus his research efforts on the effects of the physical

Grant Spotlight: 2nd Cubing Club Competition

The MLWGS Foundation proudly supported the Cubing Club's second World Cube Association (WCA) competition, which was held on January 18, 2020. Over 80 speed-solvers from Virginia, Maryland, and North Carolina tested their skills under supervision from official WCA delegates. Cubing Club officers John Staley, Jacob Lee, Ryland Wilson, Ross George, and Uzair Bhatti organized the event along with club sponsor John Wilkes. Gifts to the 2019-20 Annual Fund support everything we do.

    The Maggie Walker mural isn't the only thing sprucing up the bus entrance this year. The MLWGS Foundation supported the purchase of an electronic marquee that is officially up and running.

Grant Spotlight: Newseum

The MLWGS Foundation recently provided a grant to cover the cost of entry to the Newseum in Washington, DC for Dr. Ericson's International Relations students. They are pictured here in front of the Berlin Wall exhibit. "We had a great time. Thank you for helping to make this possible!" Dr. Ericson wrote. Grant Spotlight: Art 5 Senior Solo Shows

The MLWGS Foundation provided a grant to support Art 5 senior solo shows in 2019-20. Artist (and amateur beekeeper) Mia Rodriguez (‘20) inaugurated the series with her exhibition “Throwaway USA.”  These solo shows give students the opportunity to learn what goes into putting together a gallery opening, from installing pieces to printing and mailing invitations to writing an artist statement. Grant Spotlight: Cardiff Castle

Part of our grant supporting the December AP Comparative Gov trip to the United Kingdom will cover the cost of students visiting Cardiff Castle, located in the center of the Welsh capital city.  The castle dates from the 11th century and is built on a Roman fort dating from the 50s AD.  In the mid-1800s, the castle was under the ownership of the 3rd Marquess of Bute, reputed to be the richest man in the world at

Grant Spotlight: John Marshall House

A grant from the MLWGS Foundation covered the entry fee to the John Marshall house for Mr. Wilkes' Historiography students at the end of September.  John Marshall, the fourth Chief Justice of the Supreme Court of the United States, built the house in what is now downtown Richmond and lived there for 45 years until his death in 1835.  In his role as Chief Justice, he was instrumental in shaping the Supreme Court into what it is today,
