Thanks to a generous grant from the foundation, Dickson Benesh was able to attend the MIT Sloan Sports Analytics Conference in Boston, MA in early March.  Mr. Benesh is pictured here with Michael Lewis, the author of Moneyball: the Art of Winning an Unfair Game.  Moneyball is one of the texts Mr. Benesh teaches in his Baseball Sabermetrics seminar class.  This unique conference also included talks by noted authors such as Malcolm Gladwell, Nate Silver, Stephen Dubner

Lynn Reed and Linda Brown Westrick (’04) at the 2019 Joint Mathematics Meeting in Baltimore, MD MLWGS math teacher Lynn Reed is a 25+ year member of the Mathematical Association of America.  "I always enjoy attending the Joint Mathematics Meetings when they occur 'near' Richmond," she says.  As a member of the MAA's Mini-Course Committee, she helped to monitor six mini-course sessions like "Dance and Mathematics" and "Object Based Learning and the Smithsonian

Grant Spotlight: Professional Development

This year, the Foundation set aside $35,000 to fund professional development for MLWGS faculty.  So far this year, 26 teachers have applied for and received grants to offset costs of graduate coursework and/or conference attendance.  This funding allowed Ms. Stinnett to take a course the history of the motion picture.  It sent Mrs. Reed to "MathFest" in Chicago.  It paid for Mr. McGuire to speak as a guest of honor at the Saskatchewan Teachers Institute

Grant Spotlight: NCTM Conference

The Foundation has set aside $35,000 in this fiscal year to go toward faculty professional development.  Since June 1, twenty one teachers across six departments have accessed this funding to pay for graduate coursework, conferences, and workshops that enrich their instruction at MLWGS.  This funding just helped Mr. Benesh attend the National Council of Teachers of Mathematics 2017 Regional Conference in Chicago.  "Having a blast thanks to you guys.  Thanks again!" he wrote to us

Grant Spotlight: Kori Mosley & Tres Culturas

Kori with Peregrina Garcia, a member of the Santo Domingo Pueblo In the 2017-18 fiscal year, the Foundation has reserved $35,000 for professional development for the MLWGS faculty.  Kori Mosley recently returned from a workshop called "Tres Culturas: Exploring the Artistic Spirit of Santa Fe & Albuquerque."  Kori teaches Art I, Art II, and Art III, and is the sponsor for Art Club and for the National Art Honor Society.
