Grant Spotlight: 2nd Cubing Club Competition

The MLWGS Foundation proudly supported the Cubing Club's second World Cube Association (WCA) competition, which was held on January 18, 2020. Over 80 speed-solvers from Virginia, Maryland, and North Carolina tested their skills under supervision from official WCA delegates. Cubing Club officers John Staley, Jacob Lee, Ryland Wilson, Ross George, and Uzair Bhatti organized the event along with club sponsor John Wilkes. Gifts to the 2019-20 Annual Fund support everything we do.

Grant Spotlight: Rubik’s Cube Competition

The MLWGS Cubing Club held their first-ever Rubik's Cube Competition on Saturday, April 13th at MLWGS.  The event sold out and was a huge success!  About 250 people, including 90 competitors from age 6 to 40 along with families, guests, and volunteers came from as far away as West Virginia and North Carolina to test their skills in events with the 2x2, 3x3, 4x4, and pyraminx.  The competition was made possible by club sponsor Dawn Grois, the World

Grant Spotlight: Newtowne Tutoring

Newtowne Tutoring club members provide weekly, one-on-one after school tutoring, snacks, and organized play for elementary and middle school students from nearby schools.  Service is one of the founding principles of the school, and the Newtowne tutors are one of the best examples of how students give back in meaningful ways.  The Foundation provided a grant to support the club, and the students had this to say: "Your generosity is greatly appreciated by tutors and tutees alike.

Students involved in Peer Mentors at MLWGS are attending workshops developed by the Virginia Center for Inclusive Communities, a non-profit that works with schools and community groups through the Merging Leaders Institute.  One will focus on examining and reimagining school culture, which will allow students to think through the challenges in creating a culture where everyone belongs as well as practical ways to motivate others to work toward a more inclusive school climate.  They will also be discussing how to

Inductions for the Thomas Jefferson History Honor Society took place on the afternoon of Wednesday, October 3rd.  Matt McGuire, the society's sponsor, arranged for Dr. Johanna Neuman to address the group in the 3rd floor forum.  Dr. Neuman recently published Gilded Suffragists: The New York Socialites Who Fought for Women's Right to Vote and is currently a scholar in residence at American University. Governor School Model UN returned victorious once again from their winter conference.  The team traveled to the Norfolk Sheraton Waterside from February 15th to the 18th to compete in the Old Dominion University Model United Nations Conference.  Over 2000 students were in attendance.  Team members participated in various committees focusing on a range of topics: disarmament, humanitarian aid, economic development, security council reform, rights of indigenous peoples, and Brexit.  Award winners included: Liam Goble-Garrett ('18), Aditya Kannoth

2017 MLWGS Princeton Model Congress With help from the Foundation, the Model Congress Club attended this year's Princeton Model Congress in Washington, DC.  Princeton Model Congress is the oldest model congress in America and attracts around 1000 participants from across the country.  Over the course of a long weekend, high school students simulate all three branches of the Federal Government of the United States of America under the direction of Princeton undergraduates.  The

Six MLWGS students along with sponsor, Celie Boswell, competed in the Future Problem Solvers International Competition (FPSIC) in LaCrosse, Wisconsin from June 8 to June 11, 2017.  See the school's great write-up about their experience here.  The Foundation was happy to help offset costs for this trip as part of our commitment to funding clubs and activities.
